Warwick Presents “Drugs 101” Program
Warwick Middle School and Warwick High School will present a free parent program entitled, “Drugs 101: What Parents Need to Know” on Thursday, February 26, 2015 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Warwick Middle School Auditorium. The event is sponsored by the newly formed community organization, Action for Substance Abuse (ASAP) and presented by the Byrnes Health Education Center.
The “Drugs 101” presentation is an adult-only community program intended to provide parents with factual information regarding the various forms of drugs and the peer pressures facing students to use them. It will present current information about drugs, assist in identifying signs of substance abuse and help empower parents to discuss the dangers of drugs with their children. This program focuses on the signs, symptoms and current trends in the abuse of marijuana, heroin, and prescription drugs.
A mock bedroom, made to resemble the room of a teenager who uses drugs, will serve as the backdrop to the two-hour presentation. Parents will be asked to identify drug and alcohol paraphernalia items placed throughout the bedroom. More than 80 trendy drug and alcohol indicators will be unveiled to show how some adolescents hide drug and alcohol use from their parents.
Throughout the program, “live” role-playing demonstrations will occur to help parents initiate conversations with their child and show ways to help them beat peer pressure. Signs, symptoms and current trends of alcohol, tobacco, inhalants, marijuana, prescription drugs, and heroin will be presented.
This is an adult-only program. Registration is not required. If you have questions, please contact the high school at 626-3700 or the middle school at 626-3701.
