Lititz Summer Showcase Soccer Tournament Kicks Off Its 11th Year

The last weekend of July 2016 brought soccer players, college coaches and proud parents to fields across the Lititz and Manheim areas. The Lititz Summer Showcase kicked off its 11th annual competition, a tournament that had grown into one of the most notable youth soccer events in the region.

Teams from across the country

The showcase drew thousands of people, with teams traveling from California, Maryland, New York, Delaware, New Jersey and across Pennsylvania to compete against local Lititz squads. For a small town, it was a remarkable gathering, filling hotels, restaurants and fields for the weekend.

For visiting families, the tournament also offered a chance to discover Lititz. Between games, many explored the downtown shops, grabbed a meal or cooled off with ice cream, giving the local economy a midsummer boost.

College coaches on the sidelines

One of the biggest draws was the presence of college coaches. Representatives from a variety of colleges were on hand, from Alvernia University to York College, with most representing Pennsylvania schools. No fewer than four Penn State campuses sent coaches to scout potential players.

For young athletes hoping to play at the next level, that kind of exposure is invaluable. College recruiting in soccer relies heavily on coaches seeing players in competitive settings, and a showcase that brings many coaches to one place saves families time and travel.

Age groups and the college ID games

The tournament featured play in age groups from U9 through U19, giving younger players a taste of high-level competition alongside the older teams with college hopes.

A special feature was the Friday Night College ID Games, designed for high school juniors and seniors hoping to play in college. Participation was by nomination only. Players had to be nominated by a coach and take part in the larger tournament to compete in the ID games. That format gave college coaches a focused look at some of the most promising players in attendance.

Schedule

Games were scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, and run through Sunday, July 31, at a variety of fields throughout the Lititz and Manheim areas. A full schedule and results were posted online for families and fans who wanted to follow the action.

A growing tradition

By its 11th year, the Lititz Summer Showcase had earned a strong reputation. Its organization, quality of competition and college presence helped it attract teams from far beyond central Pennsylvania.

Tournaments like this one depend on the work of many volunteers. Coaches, referees, field managers and parents give their time to set up fields, manage schedules, run concessions and welcome visiting teams. That community effort is part of what makes the showcase possible year after year.

Youth soccer in Lititz

Soccer has deep roots in the Lititz area. Local recreational and club programs serve hundreds of young players, and high school soccer is a popular fall sport. Summer tournaments help keep players sharp during the offseason and give them a chance to test their skills against unfamiliar opponents.

For younger players, the showcase is often their first experience with a large, multi-state tournament. Playing teams from other states and seeing older players compete can be both exciting and inspiring.

More than the score

While many games were hard-fought, the showcase was about more than wins and losses. It offered players a chance to build friendships, learn from new competition and represent their clubs and hometowns. For parents, it was a weekend of cheering from the sidelines, packing coolers and shuttling between fields.

And for Lititz, it was another reminder that the town’s appeal extends well beyond its downtown. On one summer weekend each year, local fields become a crossroads for young athletes from across the country, all chasing the same dream of playing the game they love at the next level.
