Construction Begins Today along 501 at 722 (Lititz Pike and Oregon

While colorful signs of spring are emerging, yet another sign of spring will pop up today along Route 501 and Broad Street in Lititz: orange construction cones.  PennDOT announced last week that a contractor will begin inlet work today as part of a project to repair and resurface a 4.29-mile section of the road from north of the borough south to the intersection with 722.

Construction is to begin today at that southern end of the project, near the intersection of 501 and Oregon Road, according to the project superintendent.

The construction, which is expected to cause significant disturbances to traffic, will stretch from the intersection of intersection with Wynfield Drive and North New Street through Lititz Borough and the Village of Kissel Hill, down Lititz Pike to just south of the intersection with 722, Oregon Road, in Manheim Township(SEE MAP BELOW).

For the 21,850 drivers that this heavily-trafficked north-south artery averages per day, it means navigating through shifting traffic patterns with possible single-lane traffic restrictions, with flaggers directing them through the work zone on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. during the curb work and milling and base repair. Repaving operations will take place overnight this summer from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.

PennDOT advises motorists to slow down when approaching areas of the roadway undergoing construction for their own safety and that of the road crews. The department further advises drivers to be alert and obey work zone signs.

Unless you like sitting in traffic jams or waiting for flaggers to decide your lane has waited long enough, find an alternate route for your usual commute. See the MAP above for suggested alternate routes.

The $3,361,176.50 contract was awarded to Pennsy Supply, Inc. of Annville, Lebanon County. They will perform minor drainage work, curb cut work required by the Americans with Disabilities Act, roadway base repair, removal of the top layer of asphalt, and bituminous paving. New signs and pavement markings will be installed. The project is expected to be completed by the end of August.
