So many costumed kids cued up for candy in front of Front Street houses in Lititz Friday night, that sometimes the lines stretched all the way from porch to pavement.

“This is the most kids I’ve seen on Halloween night, ever,” said Jeff Henninger, who grew up in Lititz but now lives in Gettysburg. “This block is the block to come to for Halloween.

For Henninger, part of the fun was trying to guess everyone’s costume.

“Darth Vader!” called out Henninger to an approaching trick-or-treater, “Happy Halloween!” A panda, ninja, and a myriad of fictional characters filed forward for a treat.

Henninger came from all the way from Gettysburg to celebrate tonight at the home of Tim Ranck.

“I just moved to this house this year, so it was great to see a lot of the other houses going all out with Halloween,” said Ranck. Together with another friend, Ron Zickman, Ranck and Henninger dressed in Ghostbusters garb, complete with plastic guns that “sprayed” silly string onto visitors as the movie theme blared in the background.

Next door, Baltimore native April Johnson, dressed as Buzz Lightyear, was surprised at buzz of activity in the neighborhood.

“I’ve never seen this amount of people ever come out and be dressed up,” said Johnson. “And they’re all unique outfits. Some people made their own outfits. This is great. I love this.”

While costume-clad kids picked out candy, parents were pleasantly surprised to be offered Jello shots from their jovial front-porch hosts.

Across the street and to the east is the home of Craig and Amanda Hickle, who are known for their extensive display of pumpkins, including some that last year shot flames a foot high. Last year they hand-carved 55 pumpkins.  How many did they do this year?

“Seventy-two,” said Craig Hickle, who is saving the flaming ones for tomorrow night when the couple will host their annual Halloween party. For tonight, trick-or-treaters and parents alike seemed content with the couple’s display of pumpkins, ghosts, smoke and scarecrows.

Students from the fictional Hogwarts school admired the pumpkins, before selecting something from the cauldron that bore not potions, but candy. Even Harry Potter seemed impressed.
