March has come in more like a snowy owl than a lamb or a lion, bringing large snowflakes that started falling this morning.

Another couple of inches of snow has fallen on Lititz so far today, and freezing rain is expected to follow this afternoon. The change to an icy mix is already occurring in some parts of Lancaster County. Road conditions vary throughout the area, and are expected to ice over after sundown. The latest storm adds another couple of inches on top of leftover snow from the winter storms that have battered the East coast in what has been the second coldest February on record, according to Millersville University meteorologist Eric Horst.

Horst tweeted today that February was the “coldest month in 21 years (since January 1994).”

As of February 25, the average monthly temperature in Lititz was only 20.5 degrees, according to Air Traffic Control Specialist Chris Heffernan, who provided data recorded at the Lancaster Airport to LititzDailyNews.com.

“The daily minimum temperature was 11.6 degrees,” said Heffernan, ”  Not surprisingly, the daily maximum temperature for the month was a consistent below-freezing mark of 29.4.
