Borough, Township, Park Employees Cleared the Way before Holiday

Only a half dozen die-hard Lititz sledding enthusiasts remained on Bomberger’s hill late Wednesday afternoon, getting in a few final runs down the steep incline as dusk drew near. The perfect storm brought just enough snow during daylight hours on the eve of Thanksgiving to make for good sledding on a day that Warwick students were thankful they had off from school.

Meanwhile, across town, some were still working to clear sidewalks and pathways in the borough and park areas after roads were already cleared.

“We started plowing about one o’clock,” said Tyler Toburen, who was clearing snow around the Lititz Public Library in the dark just after 5 p.m. with the help of a hefty snow blower.

“The southern end [of Lititz] got more snow than the northern end,” said Toburen. He estimated that the town got “”two to three inches” in the storm that forecasters had predicted would bring twice that amount.

Once roads were clear, borough workers, including Toburen, turned their attention to the sidewalks around town. The borough clears New St. Park, Lion’s Park, and the sidewalks surrounding the library, while the township plows the parking lot.

While others were on their way to out of town destinations or home relaxing on Thanksgiving-eve, Toburen, who started working for the borough in January, had his work cut out for him.

“I still have all of 6th Street to do,” he said, noting the abundance of snow-covered sidewalks in the borough. “It’s too much to shovel, that’s for sure,” he said. He was happy with the performance of the heavy-duty snow blower.

Over in Lititz Springs Park, Jerry McKonley, park superintendent, was clearing sidewalks in the dark as a frozen mix continued to fall on him and his crew.

Park employees David Will and Lee Klink used heavy equipment and shovels to make short work of the accumulated snow. McKonley’s wife, Wanda, a volunteer, worked alongside her husband. They were happy to finish the job sooner than expected and parted sharing Thanksgiving wishes.

Editor’s Note: LititzDailyNews.com wishes to express our gratitude to all of the Lititz Borough, Warwick Township, and community employees who work hard to clear our streets and sidewalks, parks and parking lots, to help keep Lititz accessible during and after snow storms hit. We are thankful for each of you and all that you do for Lititz.
