A 29-year old Lancaster County man remains hospitalized in critical condition tonight but is expected to recover after allegedly being shot in the face and jaw by a 74-year old county man this morning in what police believe is an incident of road rage.

“The situation evolved as the result of a confrontation in the parking lot of Lititz Family Cupboard,” said Northern Regional Lancaster County Police Chief David Steffen in an interview this afternoon. Police have said that the preliminary investigation indicates that two men in separate cars were driving on Newport Road before pulling off into the restaurant parking lot at 12 W. Newport Road in Warwick Township.

According to Steffen, the alleged shooter fired a single shot with a lawfully possessed .357 caliber handgun, wounding the younger man. The 74-year old male was taken into custody at the scene and was released after questioning. Neither man has been identified by law enforcement officials.

“The names have not been released because no charges have been filed after consultation with the District Attorney’s office,” said Steffen. Charges could still be filed, and the investigation is continuing.
