As music played and clips from classic movie scenes streamed overhead, guests gathered into Roy and Skip Clair’s transformed gothic church on Orange and Broad Streets Saturday night for the gala “A Night in Hollywood” fundraiser put on by Venture Lititz.

The community turned out in force and in costume—from a couple of pseudo-Blues Brothers to The Three Musketeers, minus two—thanks to Venture Lititz, the organization that is vital to the vitality of the downtown area.

“There are some amazing costumes,” said Kelly Withum, Executive Director of Venture Lititz, who was dressed as Nurse Ratched. Some guests, she explained, dressed in “Hollywood glam,” while others went all-out dressing like specific movie characters to match the tinsel town theme. One didn’t have to go far in the crowded hall before bumping into a costumed “star.”

“I am D’artagnan,” said Jerry Storey with a tip of his hat, before introducing his daughter, Inge Storey and her husband Mark Sauder, costumed as the Uma Thurman and John Travolta characters from Pulp Fiction, Mia Wallace and Vincent Vega.

Standing nearby was a convincing Cleopatra, Bryna Freeman, proprietor of A Healing Touch of Lititz.

“I came to this event last year, and I had so much fun,” said Freeman. “I knew I had to come again this year. It’s a great event, it’s great for Lititz, and it’s a lot of fun.”

Clair Global co-founder Roy Clair circulated through the former church greeting the Lititz elite, who enjoyed both the unique setting and the chance to come together for the local cause.

“We have a store in Lititz,” said Thomas Morton of Morton Fine Furniture in Lititz, “so we came to support Venture Lititz and have a good time.” Morton wore Western-themed garb, including a leather vest, a bowler hat, and a holster with sidearm. He and his wife, Joanne, had come dressed like outlaw Butch Cassidy and his girlfriend, Etta.

“We actually have no idea what Etta looked like,” said Joanne, “but tonight she looks like me.” Two guests dressed as cinema captains, meanwhile, were at opposite ends of the room: Star Trek’s Captain Jon-Luc Picard commanded one end of the room while the irrepressible Pirates of the Caribbean rascal Captain Jack Sparrow surveyed the other. Perhaps Sparrow was keeping an eye on the rum.

Guests were eager to explain the Hollywood connection to their costumes.

“I’m Holly Golightly and he’s Paul Varjak,” said Elaine Pfeil of her husband, John, and their “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”-inspired attire. John wore a stuffed striped cat attached to the shoulder of his suit.

While some of the costumes benefited from a little explanation, one guest’s costume was easy to guess.

Michael Tait looked unquestionably dapper in his lime green Riddler suit covered with question marks, while his beautiful date dressed in a green, vine-covered costume like super villainess Poison Ivy, Batman’s nemesis.

The event featured music from Mama Tried, an open bar, hors d’oeuvres, prizes, and a movie ticket to Penn Cinema for each guest.
