The Warriors upset first place Cedar Crest 60-57 tonight at Warwick High School in a hard-fought game that saw 41 foul shots for the evening. For the seven seniors on the team who were recognized during Senior Night tonight, the defeat of the L-L leading team was an emotional highlight of their high school basketball careers.

“We just beat the number 1 team in district 3 and the 12th ranked team in the state,” tweeted senior Grant Forney after the game.

Forney turned in a trio of 3-pointers for Warwick, but in the end, it was the Warrior’s flourishing foul shots that gave them the victory.

With just seconds left in the game, two key Warwick players turned in timely free throws.

With only 12.6 seconds remaining and the game tied at 57-57, Jordan Cipalla sunk two, his final of 11 free throws for the night, securing the upset victory for Warwick.

Nate Miller then scored the final point of the game on his second of two attempts. the pair also led the team in scoring, Cipalla with 14 points and Miller with 13. Both scored the majority of their points in the game from the free-throw line.

After Miller’s shot, Cedar Crest quickly took the ball down the court, but a 3-pointer launched from mid-court bounced of the rim as the buzzer sounded.

Miller made a remarkable 8 out of 9 free throws, shooting 89%, while Cipalla sunk an impressive 8 out of 11 foul shots for a 72%. Warwick was 20 out of 27 for the night from the foul line, while Cedar Crest made just over half of their shots, turning in 8 out of 14.

“Nate was one of 4 or 5 guys we had that was coming in at 6 o’clock in the morning 2-3 times a week and working out with myself and coach Dean Melchionni,” coach Landis told LititzDailyNews.com earlier in the season after hearing the coach call out “6 a.m.” to Miller before a pivotal pair of free throws. Landis’ comments in that game guided Miller’s approach.

“I just gotta think 6 a.m. in my head,” said Miller of his process before sinking foul shots earlier in the season.

The Falcons (18-2) are bound for league playoffs, but not without first suffering the sting of a late-season loss, thanks to a Warrior team that just wouldn’t quit.

A fundraiser shootout held at halftime netted $105.31 in five minutes for a charity, according to Unite for the Kids, the Warwick student service club that sponsored the event.
