Rylee Derr Named Tourney MVP as Overtime Win Puts Team on Top

The Warwick girls’ varsity basketball team won the Elizabethtown Tip-Off Tournament Saturday night in overtime with a 48-47 win over Susquehannock.

“It was a great game from the beginning,” said Warrrior’s coach Amy Derr in an email interview after the game.

Rylee Derr turned in a stellar shooting performance, sinking four 3-pointers and nailing six of ten free throws to turn in 26 points for the night. Derr received the Tip-Off Tournament MVP award.

Susquehannock led 11-10 at the end of the first quarter, with Warwick’s Derr and Mohler the only scorers. By half time, Warwick was up 19-15 on Derr’s 3-pointer and two free throws, Ross’ 3-pointer, and a free throw from Martin. The girls made 14 out of 26 free throw attempts for the night.

“[Susquehannock] had a run at the beginning of the second half and we needed to regroup and get back to basics,” wrote Derr.

Still, Warwick managed to have their highest-scoring quarter in the third, putting 13 points on the scoreboard.

In overtime, [Susquehannock] scored 4 points and we scored 5,” coach Derr wrote. “Rylee Derr had a pass from Rene Ross and drove it in for a little jumper. That put us up [by] one with 3.5 seconds left.”

“We were able to deflect the in-bounds and it was a jump ball, and it was our possession,” she wrote. “We took the ball out with 1 second left and just held it.”

Coach Derr noted that player highlights included Rene Ross for All tournament team, and Rylee Derr for tournament MVP. Scoring by Alexa Mohler, who had 10 points and was 4 for 7 from the free throw line, and Kate Martin with 5 points, contributed to the Warrior win.
