The Warwick High School football game on Hempfield’s home turf Friday night did not start out well for the Warriors.

It didn’t end well either.

The Black Knights (3-3 L-L, 6-3 overall) handed the Warriors (1-5 L-L, 2-7 overall) their fourth loss in a row in Landisville to the tune of 42-0. With starting QB Colin Gibble sidelined for the rest of the season with an ankle injury, Warwick turned to sophomore QB Tyler Trimarchi to lead the offense.

Unfortunately, the Black Knights blitzed so often that Trimarchi (6-11-0, 39 yards) just couldn’t seem to settle into a throwing rhythm.

“They brought a lot of blitzes,” said Warwick coach Bob Locker after the game. “(Will) Blair came off the edge real well.”

Hempfield scored a touchdown on their first possession of the game after starting a drive on their own 27 yard line. It took them just six plays to get on the scoreboard thanks to a Sam Kramer pass to Dustin Walter for a 59-yard TD with 9:42 left in the first quarter. Johnson’s PAT was good, and the Black Knights pulled into the lead 7-0.

When Warwick was unable to convert a fourth down on their first offensive drive, Hempfield took possession of the ball at the Warwick 43 yard line. Touchdown number two came at the 7:27 mark remaining in the quarter when Will Blair carried for a 43-yard TD sprint. Johnson’s PAT cleared the uprights, it became 14-0, Black Knights.

After the kickoff, Deibler carried then Trimarchi kept, but an incomplete third-down pass to Chris Borg set up a fourth down punt. Hempfield quickly got a couple of first downs, but then fumbled the ball. Smith recovered it for Warwick. David Weaver gained 4 yards on a carry, but incomplete passes on the next two downs forced Warwick to punt once again.

Devin Washington carried twice in a row, but Hempfield faced a third-and-11. A pass to Ben Sahd brought the needed down. The first quarter ended with Hempfield in possession of the ball on the 39.

Blair scored on a 37-yard carry with 10:49 left in the first half. Johnson’s PAT cleared again, and Hempfield led 21-0.

After receiving the kickoff, the Warriors began a drive that looked promising and Ryan Deibler carried for some good gains, but when Trimarchi fumbled the ball on a low centering pass, it set up a 3-and-15. Trimarchi was sacked on the next play, and the team was forced to punt on a fourth-and 23.

Hempfield used a series of inside handoffs to bring the ball downfield, leading to a first-and-goal. Another inside handoff to Washington for three yards and he was over the line with 1:51 remaining in the third quarter. Johnson’s kick was good, and Hempfield pulled ahead 28-0.

(Washington) runs really, really, really, hard,” said Locker. “He may be as good a running back as I’ve seen all year.”

Ryan Deibler continued to be an asset offensively until the half ended, and again when he received the second half kickoff.

“Deibler ran the ball real well until he got hurt,” said Bob Locker.

The second half saw Washington score on a 20-yard run (which was followed by a Johnson kick), and Kramer make a 10-yard carry, also followed by a Johnson kick to bring the final score to 42-0.

“Blair and Washington are really good and the quarterback is a good athlete and between the three of them we couldn’t match their speed and we gave up the edge,” said Locker. “We had trouble running the first down. They brought a lot of blitzes. Blair came off the edge real well.”

Hempfield took advantage of the home field advantage to rush for 319 yards.  The Warriors were only able to eek out 35.

Is it hard for the Warriors to cope with four losses in a row?

“Extracurriculars teach lessons and not all are pleasant,” Locker said.

Next week the Warriors will face off against Wilson, the toughest team in the league.
