Sophomore Shines in Regional Tournament

Warwick sophomore Ben White qualified for States and finished as a semi-finalist in the Boy’s Eastern Pennsylvania Regional High School Bowling Championships held today at Leisure Lanes in Lancaster.

“It feels really good,” said White of his accomplishment after rolling a 5-game 1141 series that positioned him in a tie for 8th place. “I’ve never gotten this far in Regionals. It’s pretty great.” The top twelve qualifiers move on to the State competition.

“I did pretty well,” White said of his qualifying series. “I had a really low game close to the middle, but I picked it up after and I qualified.”

White bowled three games with an identical score in the initial rounds. He started with a 234, rolled a 278, dipped to a 161, then bounced back to score 234 in his final two games.

The top twelve bowled in bracketed play following an afternoon break that allowed time for the top twelve female competitors to arrive at Leisure Lanes from their Regional tournament at Dutch Lanes.

In the first round of bracketed play, White bested three opponents with a 257, narrowly beating out Kyle Drobeck of Conrad Weiser by two pins to move on to the quarterfinal round. Next he defeated fourth-seeded Dylan Zimmerman of Central Dauphin 246-205 to gain entry to the semi-final round of play.  It’s there that he bowed to Eric Belles of Middletown, 191-157 (see full bracket scores below).

In his second game of the qualifying play, White was just one strike away from bowling his third perfect game in the past two weeks, settling for a 278 instead.

At the conclusion of the qualifying rounds, it was announced that White finished the first part of the competition tied for 8th place after some confusion regarding official scoring.

Bracketed play among the top twelve finishers will get underway tonight at around 5:45 p.m. The outcome will determine medal positions for today’s tournament but has no bearing on the State play.

Warwick’s Austin Barilar placed seventeenth in the qualifying rounds, bowling an 1105 series with a 216, 245, 212, 206, and a 226. Barilar bowled nine strikes in the second game to finish with a 245.

Cole Snavely, Warwick’s third competitor in the Regionals, turned in a 942 for the qualifying rounds. He bowled 1 98 183, 147, 211, and a 203, placing him 81st out of the 177 competitors in the tournament.
